I'd like to know how many lives are saved and injuries avoided by children using car seats vs. by using seat belts. That is, how many children were injured or killed while wearing seatbelts who would have been saved had they been in car seats. Most stats I've seen compare car seats vs. having the child loose in the car--that's just silly. I would think that the number would be relatively small--an accident which would injure a seat-belted child could probably injure a car-seated child too. Conversely, a properly worn seat belt will protect a child almost as well as a car seat. Of course, seat belts are unsuitable for babies and infants, but car seats seem to be required for several years after that.
